What is Pilates?
Pilates is a method of movement, using the entire body to gain strength, flexibility, coordination, mindfulness and balance.
Although to some, that can sound intimidating, the wonderful thing about this movement, is that you don’t need to have any of those strengths to start.
Pilates was created in the 1920’s by Joseph H. Pilates, which back then was called Contrology. Joseph, a man truely ahead of his time, with a remarkable understanding of movement, created freeing and impactful exercises that are suitable and adaptable for any person, regardless of age, body shape, identity and limitations.
It is a combination of resistance and strength based exercise that is low impact, perfect for those who are worried about injuries or conditions. The difference from other exercises is, Pilates is highly addictive. Whilst you’re doing a Pilates class, you are focused on moving and not external thoughts. What a great way to switch off from our busy lives?! We often say that you don’t really notice the benefits of doing Pilates until you stop and all the niggles come back.
It doesn’t take long to start noticing the benefits from Pilates, from bigger range of movement, strength, improved mood, sleep, pain relief and ease at doing day to day tasks.
